Match Management

AYSO Official Game Cards help us to ensure that we are providing a program that adheres to our six core philosophies. Especially the Everyone Plays, Positive Coaching, Player Development, and Good Sportsmanship items which you have a lot of control over.

Let’s make sure we’re treating every player to a fun and rewarding season of play.

Referees, please feel free to jump to the bottom of the article for your section.

Match Management for Coaches - The 3 Quarters Rule:

AYSO firmly believes that the philosophy of “Everyone Plays” is crucial to player development. This means that AYSO enforces a rule that all players must play at least half of each match (2 quarters) and sits for no more than half of the match.

Region 180 has an extension to this policy in our bylaws (Section 4.4) requiring that no player shall play a full match unless all other players have played for 3 quarters of the same match.

Larger Teams:

We do understand that some of us have large teams, which can make balancing substitutions a bit more challenging. We need your best effort to make sure that all of our players have adequate field time to help them develop their skills (philosophy: Player Development).

Help is Available!
If you need any assistance or guidance in this matter, we are here to help and can have someone assist you. Just reach out to let us know. Thank you for your help with this important effort.

Thank you!

Thank you for taking this as seriously as we do. Aside from helping us to track team and player performance, the Game Cards are the first item that we check when there is a question or dispute about play or conduct. If we don’t have a properly completed Game Card, we may find ourselves in a situation of noncompliance which could put the region at risk in a worst case scenario that escalates.

Completing Game Cards for Coaches:

Coaches are required to fill out the front side of the game card for all 8U and older division matches and present it to the referee team. Typically, the Assistant Referee (AR) on your touchline will hold your team’s card. A Complete Game Card includes the following:

Region:180
Division: formatted as follows: 12UB or 10UG
Team #: N/A
Date: DD/MM/YY
Team Name: Your Team’s Name
Opposing Team: Coach’s Last Name or Team Name accepted
Coach’s Name: Your Last Name
Asst. Coach’s Name: Assistant Coach’s Last Name

Player Information Section:
List the players in order of jersey number, including the player’s Player First and Last Name.

Everything else will be completed by your referee team. In the instance that you do not have a referee assigned to your match, Coaches are asked to complete their own Game Cards including points scored and marking substitutions.

Tip: Fill out one Game Card completely and ask a parent or your team manager to copy it over to the remaining cards that you need for the season (9 total for the Core Program). This will save you the need to fill it out on game day.

Completing Game Cards for Referees:

Referees are responsible for marking Game Cards provided by our coaches for Goals Scored and Quarters Not Played for substitutions on the front of the card. Referees must also complete the Referee Game Report on the back of the Game Card with the following information in full:

Date: DD/MM/YY
Time: match start time
Field: field number
Conditions: fair, poor, wet, muddy, etc…
Home Team Colors:
Visiting Team Colors:
Halftime Score:
In Favor Of: Team Color
Final Score:
In Favor Of: Team Color
Conduct and Sporting Behavior Checklist
Referee Name: Last Name
Assistant Referee 1: Last Name
Assistant Referee 2: Last Name

If there is an incident of injury, player or coach caution or send off, or other matter to report, the Preliminary Incident Report must be filled out on the card and the card must be signed by all Referees on the team servicing the match.

Referees, please help us in assisting Coaches with filling out their Game Cards properly and completely. You will often have knowledge of the match and teams that they may not have access to or recall off hand (like which team is home or away).
